Russian tattoos

An editorial from Russian Vogue... it's striking that the tattoos act as a covering...for the men at least. I just found out about Russia's intense history of prison tattoos. It seems if you spent any time in prison there were different tattoos used to describe your family ties, gang alliances, crimes....

Marilyn Minter

Minter has a fetishistic approach to beauty photography. The last two photos are from a Tom Ford spread she did... she's been accused of being anti-feminist and overly pornographic. Taking innocent, girlish things like nail polish, glitter, and bubble gum and making them a bit more deranged than their usual situation. Anyways, I like 'em. Eye food for thought.

American Archive

American Archive is one of the best online stores at eBay to get your vintage. Of course it helps that they take the time to make their garments look like they're coming out of an editorial spread... for the most part this store is affordable, consistently stocked with things I want, ha, and bidding is more fun than etsy! :)

Crucible Openin!

Here are some stills from the version of The Crucible I'm in which opened at Manhattan Theatre Source this evening. A talented cast, weighty production...and such silly photos. Kidding. I'm excited to have started off in NY surrounded by such talented people and doing such a great show!

Vegan cookies and EMMA!

The new BBC Emma is so worth watching. While the chance to watch for frivolous frocks is best left to Hollywood or remakes of Vanity Fair, the BBC has always most faithfully brought Austen's work to life. (And Brontë's and Christie's). I'm quite wrapped up all over again in Emma's sweet, misguided little world...waiting for her to notice the loved one right in front of her. Romola Garai is fun to watch. A bit over-expressive for my taste, but maybe I should give this Brit some leeway. They don't all have to be sooo reserved....

I made these sugar-free, vegan treats to replace a cookie craving and I love them. Though I think they might be wonderful as breakfast bars. Next time I'll add in some dark chocolate and organic cocoa powder to make them a bit fudgier. So the recipe is as follows:

2 (over) ripe bananas
2 tbs almond milk, sugarless
3 tbs maple syrup
1/4 cu flour
1/3 cu crunchy natural peanut butter
dash cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cu quick cooking, rolled oats

Mash/mix all together and bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.

Outfit by knightcat

The only thing I'd change about Knightcat's outfit is to substitute in an Asprey ring that Angelina Jolie is promoting as benefit jewelry for her Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. Snake's are a 'lucky' symbol for her fam, I just like them as jewelry pieces. It's very Medusa.

Also, I'm sad Chloe had so many wardrobe issues at the Golden Globes this evening. From rain to rips, but she still walked with the award. Go, BIG LOVE!

Pin me up, Pin me down

Miranda  Kerr in Vmag. I prefer the images in black and white. The bodies, bodies' lines are more interesting in those shots. They should have chosen someone with a bit more of an hourglass figure...if they'd have dared...

McCartney Thigh-Highs

Now that my Jeffrey Campbell studded booties aren't as shocking, Stella McCartney has to come out with something even more shocking. Studded, thigh-highs. And dearest Blake makes them oh so perfect by pairing them with a masculine blazer and oxford shirt. Collarless, y'all. She's pictured here with the genius behind GG costuming, Eric Daman.

romance was born

Bat for Lashes/Natasha Kahn mentioned this line, Romance Was Born, in a recent interview. While their website doesn't do them justice they've been springing up in a lot of editorials and offbeat artist's/actor's ensembles. The feathers, the crocheted headdresses...  making outfits out of things you find in the woods or what you bring to the woods to stay warm is cool. It certainly is romantic enough for this singer who's all about the elements. I'm down.

Metropolis

Karl Lagerfeld turns to the cinéaste as he recalls scenes from Fritz Lang's Metropolis in this German Vogue shoot. We have a slightly glamorized Maria (the proletariat worker) and her transformation into the robot in the hands of a mad scientist. Lagerfeld even went as far to double impose a shot mimicking a special effect new to filmmaking at the time. Touché, Karl, touuuuuché.

Cooking 101, Again

I believe I've already posted about this genius woman, but Heidi Swanson at 101 Cookbooks has some of the most delicious, simple, healthy recipes I have ever encountered. She assembles all her gems from friends, myriads of cookbooks, and her own vast foody knowledge.

So far, I've tried and loved the mushroom casserole, the roasted corn pudding in acorn squash, and a potato-based frittata (the sauce for this one is where it's all about). Ms. Swanson has also taught me that simply tossing broccoli in olive oil and sea salt and throwing it in the oven is soooo good. Another highlight, her lovely photography.
